Wait...Is That Kim Kardashian Wearing an Ordinary Everyday Mom Hairstyle?

As someone who spends her days wrangling two toddlers (on top of all this writing about beauty), when I look at photos of new mom Kim Kardashian all glammed up or stripped down, I feel neither envious nor judgmental. I just feel...tired. I mean, we all aspire to be the really pulled-together parent at the playground, but at some point your priorities shift and you no longer feel bad about wearing a plain-old ponytail every day. Yet Kim has a lot of pressure on her to look perfect all the time (however much of that happens to be self-imposed).

And that's why these photos of Kim and Kourtney Kardashian make me happy.

Yep, those are just some run-of-the-mill ponytails on the Kardash girls. I couldn't be more relieved to glimpse them just looking like ordinary busy moms. True, there are still the stilettos and smoky eye makeup, but this is real-life mom hair if I've ever seen it (especially Kourtney's pony, with the way those short layers frustratingly pop out on top). Maybe soon we'll see Kim step out wearing only some Aquaphor from the diaper bag, a la Jessica Simpson! Somehow I doubt it.

Do you aspire to keep doing your hair when you're a mom? If you're a mom already, what does your everyday hair tend to look like? Do you rely heavily on ponytails like me?

Brothers use Covina hair salon to back philanthropic efforts

Owners Albert Cortez, left, and brother Jerry Cortez through his business Kut Haus Salon at Kut Hauss Salon in Covina on Friday, Dec. 12, 2013. The salon is going to offer 3,800 employees of the Citrus Valley Health Network free hair cuts, a value he estimates at $208,000. (Watchara Phomicinda / Staff Photographer)

COVINA >> Jerry and Albert Cortez grew up with a frequent message from their parents to give back whenever they could.

The brothers and business partners now use their recently opened hair salon to do just that.

“We didn’t come the richest household,” Albert Cortez said. “But we always got taught to give back and say thanks.”

“We have to thank our mom for that,” Jerry Cortez said.

The siblings own and operate the high-end Kut Haus Salon at 116 East Badillo Street. Their philanthropy began before the salon though. Albert Cortez largely attributes the start to a minor donation that spiraled into an annual fundraiser.

“It wasn’t supposed to be this big,” Jerry Cortez said. The brothers planned to initially give $500, but instead helped start Dare to Care, an annual “haircut-a-thon” that raises funds for the Citrus Valley Hospice in honor of Covina Mayor Walt Allen III’s late wife, Pat Allen, who died from cancer in 2009.

Cortez approached Allen about the idea several weeks after Pat’s death, raising $8,000 in the first year and more than $150,000 total since the first event, according to Albert Cortez. The event brings together stylists and salons from across the city to donate the costs of hair cuts to the hospice.

Albert Cortez recently won Covina’s Community Hero award for 2013.

“I think it is great what he has done and Jerry deserves a lot of credit as well,” Allen said. “Both have really given back to the community.”

Allen referred to Albert as a “lightning rod for volunteerism.”

“He and his brother really demonstrate that young people do give back to society,” he said.

The brothers bounced between salons up and down Citrus before finally deciding to open their own shop. Kut Haus opened its doors nine months ago, Albert Cortez said.

“We’ve been growing so rapidly,” Jerry Cortez said, who notes the salon aims to give a unique and positive experience to every guest. While waiting for a seat, a guest can have lemonade or a mimosa and listen to music, sometimes played by a live disc jockey.

The brothers’ newest philanthropy ties back to their new salon. Kut Haus Salon is offering free hair cuts to all of Citrus Valley Health Partners’ roughly 3,200 employees starting January 7th until March.

“There are no restrictions, they don’t have to buy anything,” Albert Cortez said.

With the average cut costing about $65, the duo’s gift is valued at about $208,000, he said.

“They help save lives, we just cut hair,” Albert Cortez said. “These types of people don’t really get much recognition. So it is just a way for us to say thank you.”

The cut includes as shampooing and a style. All an employee has to do is present their Citrus Valley badge, Albert Cortez said. He said they selected Citrus Valley because of their past experiences with Dare-to-Care and other charity work they’ve done in collaboration the health network.

“These are the people that are saving lives, making a difference,” he said. “They need this type of service and we offer it.”

How to create the perfect party hairstyle

by Taryn Davies | 19 December 2013

Create the perfect party style, guaranteed to stay in place through the duration of your Christmas party, as Michael Douglas,Silvikrin Style Director shows you how to create a loose chignon for the festive season. This look is not only super chic, but it's incredibly easy to do.

Watch the video below to see how quick and easy it is - practise makes perfect too. So, try it out before your big night to ensure you have the look perfected.

Top tip: Take extra clips in your handbag too, in case some strands fall loose, especially with all of the dancing you'll be doing.

How to: Loose Chignon

1. Begin by blow drying the Hair using a mousse to provide the perfect base for your do. I recommend the Silvikrin Anti-Ageing Mousse which delivers visibly more fullness, volume and shine!

2. Gently backcomb small sections of Hair at the roots, then use a bristle brush to smooth out the surface of the hair

3. Tie a loose ponytail in your desired position, low in the nape behind your ear

4. Using grips, gradually pin the mid-length of your ponytail round onto itself, creating a low chignon

5. Each time you do this, the style will look slightly different so if at first it doesn’t look quite right, take the pins out and try again until it’s perfect

6. Finally to hold your style in place, finish off with hairspray. This will also keep any loose strands off the face

Be a Healthy Hairdresser

This time last year, a long-time salon owner friend dropped me a note that said, “We hairdressers are really great at taking care of other people and making sure they feel good, but lousy at doing the same thing for ourselves.

“We skip meals,” she continued, “and barely make time to go to the bathroom-except when we have to, because we drink too much caffeine. Our own hands and nails get dry, cracked and sore. Our back, knees and wrists give us grief. Allergies and respiratory issues nag and won’t go away. We’re too exhausted after a long day at the salon to work out like we should, and most of us shift right into focusing on our families after we finish our clients.

“The longer I do this career I love so much,” she concluded, “the more I feel the ‘wear and tear.’ I think MODERN should do special issue or article to help us salon people get on a healthier track. The holidays are coming, and are especially hard.”

Everything she said rang true to what I have heard and seen from many of you in the MODERN community. Her words echoed again in the details of this year’s “Hope is in Style” campaign to raise awareness and funds for diabetes, a serious career threat for salon professionals (see page 76). So we’re taking the advice. This month, MODERN previews a new Healthy Hairdresser series of content to “help you take care of you,” focusing on Diabetes Awareness Month.

In addition to adding monthly articles on health education, inspiration and peer profiles to the magazine, this January we will launch a Healthy Hairdresser resource center on modcrnsalon.com, a Healthy Hairdresser Tuesdays e-letter and Healthy Hairdresser tips and encouragement on our social media, all designed to help you maintain a healthy body, healthy spirit, healthy mind. We are also planning expanded sections on key wellness topics, a special MODERN SALON Healthy Hairdresser guide and a Healthy Hairdresser challenge. Stay tuned!

We are creating MODERN SALON’s Healthy Hairdresser series to be for and about you, but we also want it to be from you. Do you have a Healthy Hairdresser question to ask, tip to share or inspirational story to tell? We want to hear how are you staying healthy, what help you need to get healthy, and what would you like to see in our new Healthy Hairdresser series and special sections in 2014. E-mail me at mmusgrove@vancepublishing.com or post your ideas of “being healthy” pics on our MODERN SALON Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest feeds (#healthyhairdresser).

Signs you need a new haircut

Signs you need a new haircut (Thinkstock photos/Getty Images)

The most common signs of getting a new haircut are split ends, lack of volume and uneven layers. Here are a few other reasons you should go for a brand new haircut

1. Your current haircut isn't complementing your face

A perfect haircut should match the shape of your face, add volume to your hair at the right places and point out the best features. If your current hairstyle is failing to do all this, ditch it for a new one. Go to a salon and ask the stylist for recommendations according to your requirements. Once you decide on a particular hairstyle, go for it and see how a hairstyle can work wonders in enhancing your personality.

2. You've thought about it more than once

If your inner voice has been repeatedly telling you to go for a haircut and you've been ignoring it since long, it's time for some action. Instead of secretly envying the celebrities with a great haircut, why don't you go for a haircut that is envied by others? Take the words 'change' and 'experiment' seriously.

3. You are out of ideas

If you are opting for the same kind of ponytail or a plait day in and day out, it's time you go for a new haircut. Moreover, on special occasions, if a blowout or straight flat hair is the only thing you do, you definitely need a refreshing cut. A new haircut will help you experiment with hairstyles.

4. No compliments?

Who doesn't love compliments? Everyone does. If you haven't been receiving compliments for your hair for quite some time or the focus has shifted to other things like your outfit, shoes etc. than you might as well opt for a change in the haircut. Consult a professional to look for options and opt for a hairstyle that you think will suit you best. Once you've got a great cut, colour and style your hair well to receive those feel-good compliments again.

5. You're starting a new phase in life

Every night change in life deserves a hairstyle update and a newer you. If you just going to start high school or taking up a new job, revamp your look. It will not only help you turn a new leaf but also help you regain confidence and make you feel good physically and emotionally.

6. You are depressed

Does your hairstyle make you say "Hello gorgeous" every time you look at yourself in the mirror? Does it allow you to do various things with your hair? If yes, you've got the right hairstyle. If no, we are sure your hairstyle is one of the reasons you are depressed and bored. Try a new haircut and you'll certainly feel happier and content.
