She's still a pin-up! Holly Madison goes glam with '50s-style hair and make-up

Holly Madison has well and truly shed the baby weight since welcoming her first child, daughter Rainbow, into the world on March 5.

The former Playboy model looked not just back to her pre-pregnancy best, but better than ever as she hit the red carpet at the opening night of the Nevada Ballet Theatre's production of The Nutcracker in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The bubbly blonde, who turns 34 on December 23, easily stole the show in her figure-hugging royal blue one-shouldered gown, which featured a cut-out back.

What a cracker! Holly Madison wowed on the red carpet at the Nevada Ballet Theatre's production of The Nutcracker in Las Vegas on Saturday, held at The Smith Center For The Performing Arts

The floor-length creation featured a flattering ruched bodice, not that the star needed to disguise anything, with her clearly trim and toned midsection apparent to all.

Leaving her nine-month-old in the capable hands of husband Pasquale Rotella - with whom she tied the knot on September 10 - Holly treated herself to a fun and decidedly girlie night out at the ballet, which took place at The Smith Center For The Performing Arts.

The star styled her golden tresses in a '50s-style half up, half down 'do, with her face framed by a large curl.

Getting in the Christmas spirit: The new mom left her baby daughter in the capable hands of doting husband Pasquale Rotella as she enjoyed the decidedly girlie night out at the ballet

Her make-up was exquisite, with lashings of mascara setting off her perfectly rimmed eyes, a touch of rosy blush on her cheeks and glossy red lips completing the look.

Holly did her best Angelina Jolie pose with her right leg thrust out through the thigh-high slit in her dress, exposing her black spider's web-like stilettos, as she posed for photographers alongside a laughing Veronic Dicaire.

The French-Canadian singer sadly looked positively dowdy next to the flashy bombshell, as she covered up in a rather unflattering long-sleeved dress with ruffled hem that was in shades of blue, brown, black and white.

She teamed the outfit with black stockings and matching lace-up shoes.

All angles covered: The star stood out in her floor-length frock, which featured a ruched bodice, embellished shoulder detail and cut-out back

Tress to impress: The 10 best hair products from X Factor's hair supremo

Create a hair with the X Factor [CATHERINE HARBOUR]

If anyone knows how to transform a hairstyle, it must be Jamie Stevens.

As The X Factor’s hair supremo and TRESemmé ambassador, he’s responsible for reinventing the show’s contestants every week. So who better to ask for advice on taking your hair from day to night this party season?

"If you’re heading out after work, it’s worth starting the day by shampooing and conditioning to prepare your hair for styling,” says Jamie. “A good base is vital if you want your hair to go the distance, so make sure you don’t skip styling products either. Get your product right and you can recreate the effect of a 20-minute blow dry – the smoothness, body and volume – in just a couple of minutes with a quick blast of the hairdryer.”

These days, however, it’s not just what you use but how you use it that counts.

“I love to ‘cocktail’ my products, so I tend to fill my hand with mousse and add a few squirts of serum before running it through hair,” explains Jamie. “That way, you get an even distribution and a two-in-one finish. It smooths and shines while avoiding any of the crispiness that scares people away if they haven’t tried mousse since the 80s.”

But if you’ve created the perfect style first thing, how can you make it last all day?

“Hair will always naturally drop within a few hours,” says Jamie. “So if you’re styling in the morning, tie it up until you’re ready to go out, then release it and add some extra oomph with a root-boosting hairspray or shine serum.”

That will only work if your ’do has escaped the house intact, but Jamie has another top tip to make sure it does. “People go back into a steamy bathroom to apply their make-up after they’ve finished styling their hair,” he says. “But that will bring back the frizz in an instant, so make sure you have a make-up mirror somewhere else in the house.”

Problem solved – but did you even need to worry about your hair in the first place? “I probably shouldn’t say this,” confides Jamie, “but if you’re looking for an instant transformation, you really don’t have to do much to hair if you’re upgrading your outfit. Wear a messy topknot with skinny jeans and a T-shirt during the day, and that’s as casual as it gets. But put on a show-stopping dress and you can keep the same style for evening. Just give it a spritz of shine spray, pop in a jewelled clip and you’re instantly the belle of the ball.”

If you’re not doing a lot with your outfit, however, that’s when you need your hair to make the impact. “One of my favourite tips for getting party hair – if you don’t have time to go home first – is to throw mini styling irons in your handbag,” says Jamie. “Ideally you’d have heated rollers to achieve full-on glamour, but you can’t carry those around with you, let alone use them in the office loos. Mini styling irons give you the best of all worlds – you can tong, straighten or use them as a wand, but they’re perfectly portable too.

“A great way to add a bit of extra body is simply to curl your hair round something tube-shaped, like a pencil or the cardboard centre from a roll of wrapping paper – which is always lying around at this time of year. Then apply heat to your hair by pressing the surface with your styler. Just make sure your improvised curler isn’t plastic, which will melt, or metal, which conducts the heat so well that you’ll frazzle your hair.”

And the man who stops those X Factor hairdos from wilting under the stage lights has one final word of advice: “If you’re partying in a hot atmosphere or sweaty nightclub, your style will suffer, so keep a mini hairspray in your bag to refresh it when you pop to the ladies.

"But don’t forget that parties are about having a great night out with friends and that even if your hair does drop as midnight approaches, people will only remember how great you looked when you arrived. So just make sure you’re ready to wow them when you walk in.”

Bobbie's Buzz: 4 ways to style your hair during the holidays

Video: TODAY style editor Bobbie Thomas shows Kathie Lee and Hoda how you can change up your hair for holiday parties and gatherings, with items to you get quick curls, a bob, or stylish braids.

Just in time for year-end office parties, family gatherings and more, TODAY style editor and author Bobbie Thomas shares some quick and easy ways to style your hair — without the help of a pro.

A faux bob secretSarah Potempa’s The Wrap Up is one of my go-to products when I’m looking for a fun, temporary transformation. Slip the end of your hair through the opening in the tool, roll it up to create the illusion of a short, faux bob, and secure in place by turning the edges inward ($12, sarahpotempa.com).

Twist for quick curlsNext, a DIY idea for loose, wavy locks. Simply section your hair, twist your tresses, and while holding your strands in place at the end, use a flat iron to apply heat moving slowly up and down the twisted piece. The heat will help seal soft waves into place, so allow for a 30 second cool-down before letting go of each twist. You could use duck bill hair clips to help keep hair in place while moving onto the next section. Just finish the look with a texturizing volumizer like Oribe's Dry and/or set with hair spray.

Tuck and roll toolsFor those interested in an elegant updo, Conair’s French Twist Kit can help. Instructions will help you clip hair into an attached barrette on the cone-like form, then roll into shape, and secure with the supplied bobby pins for an instant, runway-inspired look.

If your hair happens to be short or thin, you can also try using their pompadour comb for a boost of volume. Pull hair back and using the comb vertically, slide into place at the back center of your head, then roll and/or tuck hair around to cover the comb. Finish with pins and set with spray ($4.99, Walgreens.com).

Braiding BFF'sLast but not least, a solution for those of us who are braid-challenged. Both Vidal Sasson's Braiding Clip ($4.99, Walgreens.com) and the Magic Fishtail Hair Tool can help you create chic woven styles by guiding your hands and your hair to the exact right places ($8, urbanoutfitters.com). A useful tip to know, youtube videos can be very handy when using these products!

Courtney Stodden Dyes Hair, Goes Brunette: "I Feel Born Again"

Courtney Stodden is a blonde bombshell no more. The newly single 19-year-old -- who split from her 53-year-old husband, Doug Hutchison, in November -- is embracing her dark side by dyeing her trademark platinum tresses a dark brunette color. She showed off the new look at the Wowie Awards on Dec. 12. See more photos of Courtney Stodden.

"Lately I've been a little bit of a daredevil, and I'm trying to enter into the next chapter of my life," the Celebrity Big Brother U.K. star explained to Us Weekly at the Globe Theatre in L.A. "I thought this was kind of a good example to prove to myself that I can do it. It was a huge risk, but I'm glad I did it."

That said, she's still getting used to the idea of herself as a brunette. "It's really new. When I walk by a mirror I'm thinking I'm blonde," she said of the makeover, which happened earlier this week. "Like, 'Oh my God -- who is that? It's me!'"

"I feel born again," she added. "I'm excited to go out and see the life of a brunette."

She's also excited to see the life of a single 19-year-old. Having married Hutchison when she was just 16, Stodden missed out on some typical teenage rites of passage -- like getting her driver's license.

"When I was 16 I got my marriage license, but I didn't get my driver's license," she quipped. "So those kinds of things I'm really excited about doing."

7 Life-Changing Habits for Your Most Gorgeous Hair Ever

imaxtree

Have you ever looked at a woman on a blistery day, wind whipping your hair all akimbo, and noticed her tresses look…perfect. How does she do it? It's all in how you care for your hair, baby. Granted, hair that doesn't move is either under a hat or a serious amount of styling product. But that shine, those perfectly un-split ends…that's taking care of your assets in between styling sessions.

If you've ever wondered how to separate haircare fact from fiction (no, trimming your brazilian hair does NOT make it grow faster), we're here to help. Live by these seven rules and you'll be on your way to giving yourself the hair you've always dreamed of. Note: healthy hair is also a product of taking care of your body and your stress level. As if you needed another reason to be an all-around healthy gal, add gorgeous hair to the list. Now, here are the ways to protect hair and treat it right, once and for all!

1.) Skip Daily Shampooing

If you're washing your hair every day, you're doing it a major drying-out disservice. I know, you're like, "But I have super oily hair!" That's what dry shampoo is for. Or just warm water in the shower. You do not need to shampoo every day. Every other day is plenty and your hair will look better for it. Trust. Try to keep the shampoo on your scalp and the conditioner for your lengths and ends, too.

2.) Stock Up on Vitamins

Look at the labels of the products you buy and stick to nourishing natural vitamins, minerals and even oils. They do your hair good, just as they do the rest of you good when you eat them. In fact, consuming healthier foods will directly contribute to healthier hair. Think of essential fatty acids, leafy greens and vitamins A, E and C.

3.) Brush Sparingly

There's only one reason to brush your hair — ever. If you're being a good girl and haven't shampooed it in two or three days, you might notice some oil buildup on your roots. That's natural, normal and healthy. Use a boar bristle brush from root to tip to distribute that natural shine serum from the top of your head to the tips. Otherwise, stick to combing. Combs don't flatten your volume or reduce your natural wavy or curly texture.

4.) Dye Wisely and Only Out of Necessity

It's sort of common sense to dye your hair sparingly, right? But if you're an at-home dyer, here's another tip that will make your hair look 25 when you're 45: Dye only your roots on a four to six week basis. This saves the length and ends of your hair from extra damage. As for the rest of your hair, it can be dyed only a few times per year if it's particularly faded or brassy. As a blonde who's been dying her hair for 15 years and using this method, I revel in compliments about how healthy my hair looks. People assume it's natural – nope!

5.) Listen to your Scalp

Your scalp is an indicator of your hair type. If it's oily, are your strands. If it's dry and flaky, expect brittle, breakable hair. Depending on what you observe, choose your haircare products. Moisturizing for you dry types and clarifying for extra oily scalps.

6.) Use Protection

Like skin, hair retains damage from heavy and repeated sun exposure. If you can wear a hat on a sunny day, do so. Now imagine what a blower and flat iron are doing to your strands. Yikes. Too many women think heat-protectant creams and sprays are an unnecessary add-on to their haircare regime, but without them, you might as well be hanging out in the middle of the Sahara in your polka dot bikini sans sunscreen.

7.) Stay Trimmed

Once and for all, keeping hair trimmed does not promote growth. You hair grows from your roots, not your ends. What getting your hair trimmed actually does for you is keep your ends looking…trimmed and healthy! It also allows your hair to look its best while it grows out. Split ends don't necessarily stop at the tips either. Without a trim, they'll just keep moving up the hair shaft, meaning you could be in for losing more hair than you want when you sit down in your stylists chair.

A Definitive Ranking of the Hair in 'American Hustle'

Esther Zuckerman

Sony Pictures

American Hustle is a movie about con men. It's also a movie about hair. The hair in the movie is its own character—or, well, characters. From Bradley Cooper's curls to Jennifer Lawrence's towering up-do, it's over-the-top and loud, sometimes distracting, and sometimes perfect, all part of this wacky late-'70s world David O. Russell created for the film. "It was such a wonderfully exuberant era, it was like Halloween for a decade," star Christian Bale said at recent press conference for the film.

To honor this hair, we created a ranking (worst, relatively speaking, to best) of its use in the film. Our criteria is not simply which is the best hair, because no one really wins here, it's what hair has the perfect combination of style, outlandishness, and meaningfulness to the character and the film as a whole.
15. Stoddard Thorsen (Louis C.K.)

While we love Louis C.K. in the film as the frustrated supervisor of Bradley Cooper's unruly FBI agent, his hair unfortunately ranks the lowest on this list for the simple reason that it's the same as Louis C.K.'s normal hair. Sorry, Louis. We need a transformation.

14. Pete Musane (Jack Huston)

Once again, this is essentially Jack Huston's hair, so it does not deserve the credit that other hair in this movie does. It only ranks higher than Louis C.K.'s hair because of the natural lusciousness of Huston's mane. (Also, we like that he keeps his Boardwalk Empire mustache for the role.)

13. Anthony Amado (Alessandro Nivola)

Amado is a sleazy prosecutor, and he ends up sporting a matchy-matchy slicked-back 'do. Standard sleazeball hair. Boring.

12. Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams): Straight/Wavy Hair

Don't get me wrong, Adams' has spectacular hair, but this is not her best look in this movie. It's lovely, but it's not her hair doing the work in these early scenes, it's her costumes. Take away the wrap dress and you could have Giselle from Enchanted.

11. Carl Elway (Shea Whigham)

Elway is one of those characters who comes and goes so quickly in this movie that you're not sure why he's there in the first place. But he has horrible hair. Horrible, wonderful hair. There's a stringy yellow mop on his head, accentuated in a ponytail. It isn't higher only because we can't figure out what the purpose of it is.

10. Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale): Chest Hair

Makeup department head Evelyne Noraz told The Cut that Bale asked for more chest hair. The problem is that the chest hair issue neither here nor there. It's surely no match for whatever is on his head, nor is it a match for his protruding stomach. It was a good try, but it somehow feels lackluster. Don't ask us why. Explaining underwhelming chest hair is a fool's errand.

9. Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner)

Renner's New Jersey politician has a beautiful bouffant, but it just doesn't say as much about his character as some of the other hair in this film does. It is, however, marvelous.

8. Victor Tellegio (Robert De Niro)

De Niro's appearance in the film has (sort-of) been kept quiet, but his hair is worth talking about here. In a way, it's sort of anti-De Niro, who has somehow maintained a full head of hair even has he has entered the Last Vegas stage of his career. The weird baldness of threatening mobster Tellegio both shrinks De Niro, and somehow makes him more threatening. It is a feat.
7. Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper): Chest Hair

Now we're getting into the good stuff. Cooper's chest is a mix of sexy—sorry! had to be said!—and his character's trying-too-hard attitude. Praised be this chest hair.

6. Dolly Polito (Elisabeth Röhm)

A secondary character like Dolly, wife of Carmine, did not need to have such wonderful hair, but the skunk-y up-do affixed to the head of Elisabeth Röhm is such a treat. It's everything a Jersey housewife's hair should be, and yet Dolly is sweeter than that stereotype suggests. Maybe we're pushing it here, but her hair is is a metaphor for one of the movie's themes: sometimes the supposed crooks aren't the real crooks.

5. Rosalyn Rosenfeld (Jennifer Lawrence): The Head Donut

Rosalyn's buttoned up hairdo, in which her blonde locks form a sort of cushion on top of her head, is obviously notable, but not the purest expression of her character. It's just a little too put together for this mess of a woman.

4. Sydney Prosser: Curlers

Sydney's oversized Curlers of Distress manage to make her look both good and slightly unhinged. It's transitional hair, but it's vital.

3. Tie: Rosalyn Rosenfeld: Unfurling Up-do and Sydney Prosser: Perm

Perhaps this is a cop-out, but we really had a hard time pitting these two wonderful dos against one another. They are just both so magnificent and work so well together. Rosalyn's hair, with its artful bits falling across her cheek, is working hard to be fancy; Sydney's crimping explosion is free, but it isn't her real hair. The wildness of Sydney's hair shows who she wants to be: unconstrained. The fact that it's so unnatural shows how she's trapped by her lack of identity.

2. Irving Rosenfeld: Combover

It's hard not to argue that this is the definitive hair of the movie. Russell loved it so much that he made the first scene of the movie all about it. But the attention to the combover is, in a way, a little forced. The combover is significant, make no doubt about that, but it's also aware of its importance, which is why it takes the second spot here.

1. Richie DiMaso: Curls

As with Irving's combover, the audience gets an insider's look at the process by which Richie achieves his tightly-wound curls, via a scene where he's all done up in curlers like your auntie. It's am important scene, because Richie's curls are the pinnacle of hair in the movie. They are flashy without being as ostentatious (as is the combover), but they contain multitudes. At a press conference last weekend, Cooper explained that, Russell came up with the idea that DiMaso would curl his own hair in an effort to look "different." Cooper explained: "He’s trying to be like these guys who he sort of thinks are these archetypes of men to him—like Dock Ellis, this baseball player who curls his hair." But Cooper also noted that Richie was also like a little kid. Curls speak to that too. The curls are all. Congratulations, curls.

Hottest hair trends for 2014

A model gets her hair done backstage. PHOTO: REUTERS

NEW DEHLI: The new year calls for new things. Why not try a fresh hairstyle too?

Hairstylist Asgar Saboo predicts the hairstyles which will be in vogue and which ones will be out of fashion in 2014. The Britain-based stylist has suggestions for women as well as men.

For Women:

Windswept up-dos: This look is both casual and dishevelled, yet oozes subtle glamour and charm. For those who are a fan of up-dos, it is recommended letting plenty of loose locks fall around the face, when pinning hair up.

Short hair and cropped pixie cuts: Looking for a drastic change? Give yourself a cropped hair style. If you already have short hair, a great way to make cropped cut more exciting is to add layering. However, it is advised to always consider face shape and hair texture before making any dramatic change.

Braids: For those ladies who are thinking about spring and summer of next year, they can start experimenting with braids. Popular ones include the braid crown, in which a thick braid is wrapped around the crown of the head and the fishtail braid intertwining with neutral coloured ribbons, creating a fun yet sleek and subtle twist.

For Men:

Long hair: Keeping hair long will give you a chance to create numerous styles as per your wish. Static buzz cuts are no longer on trend – long hair, which can be tousled, swept to the side or slicked back in a “Great Gatsby” style is in!

Accessorise: Men can accessorise using a bandana. For those apprehensive, bandana is both masculine and casual and can work extremely well for men who are too lazy to style their hair.

Sharp fringes and varied lengths: For an edgier look, a rise in the short, sharp fringe, is often carried well and emphasised when the sides and crown of the head are cut short. Not only is this a refreshing change but it also works well for those who wish to hide a receding hairline or simply keep their foreheads covered.
